Visit to Anandwan — A Lesson in Dignity, Rehabilitation & Hard Work

Field Report by: Rahul Deshmukh, Class: BCA-III • Visit Date: February 6, 2020

I had heard about Anandwan — that one revered man named Baba Amte treated leprosy patients and rehabilitated them with dignity. From that time I harboured deep curiosity about his monumental work: What exactly had he accomplished? What does authentic rehabilitation for leprosy survivors truly mean? All those questions found profound answers the moment our CPC NSS delegation entered Anandwan.

As we entered the premises, we were astonished by how perfectly planned and meticulously maintained everything was. After witnessing such a thriving, self-sufficient community, our quest to understand Anandwan expanded rapidly.

“We first visited the artisan workshops where residents created exquisite showpieces and greeting cards out of waste materials. Made with colourful threads and intricate care by individuals with visual or speech impairments, these greeting cards are celebrated across India. We then observed awe-inspiring wooden carvings, custom mobility tricycles, steel cupboards, and powerlooms run entirely by visually impaired craftspeople. People here also manufacture sweaters, sandals, travel luggage, and run a full printing press, alongside the musical troupe ‘Swaranandwan’.”

Later, we visited the sacred Samadhi of Baba Amte and Sadhana Amte. The site of the Samadhi was formerly a graveyard. Baba Amte famously declared: “My entire life I have spent serving people, so let me rest among them.” Sadhana Tai mirrored his devotion, stating that throughout life she walked beside him, and in eternity she would rest peacefully with him.

Key Reflections Observed by CPC NSS Volunteers:

  • •Exemplary Water Management: Vidarbha is known for water scarcity, but Anandwan faces zero shortage due to rainwater harvesting.
  • •100% Organic Agriculture: Every consumable from grain wheat to green vegetables is cultivated locally on campus farmland.
  • •Hard Work as Divine Worship: No religious temples exist on site; every resident embodies the creed that sincere labour is true worship.
  • •Eradication of Social Stigma: Spreading awareness, early medical treatment, and societal acceptance represents Baba Amte’s true victory.
